Building meaningful connections for older people
The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) supports older people who may be feeling socially isolated or lonely by connecting them with caring volunteers for regular companionship and friendly visits.
At ARAS, we believe everyone deserves to feel connected, valued and included. Through ACVVS, volunteers and older people build genuine friendships by sharing conversations, hobbies, interests and life experiences that can improve wellbeing and quality of life.
Who is the program for?
ACVVS is available to older people who may be socially isolated or lonely and who are receiving Australian Government-funded aged care services, including:
- residents living in residential aged care homes
- eligible Support at Home recipients
What does an ACVVS volunteer do?
ACVVS volunteers provide friendship, companionship and regular social connection.
Depending on the interests of the older person, visits may include:
- enjoying a chat over a cup of tea
- playing games or completing puzzles
- reading books, magazines or newspapers
- sharing hobbies and interests
- listening to music
- going for a walk, where appropriate
- celebrating special occasions
- simply spending time together
Volunteers do not provide personal care, transport, household tasks or clinical support. Their role is to offer companionship and help build meaningful social connections.
Become a volunteer
Volunteering with ACVVS is a rewarding way to make a real difference in someone's life.
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. No previous experience is required — just compassion, reliability and a genuine interest in connecting with older people.
ARAS provides training, support and ongoing guidance throughout your volunteering journey.
